Monroe may get single Senate seat

Tentative Senate map

HARRISBURG – A tentative map released by the Pennsylvania Legislative Reapportionment Commission would put Monroe County in a single Senate district.  Monroe, one of Pennsylvania’s fastest growing counties, currently is split among six districts, with no senator actually living in the county.

To achieve the new map, the 45th district, current in western Pennsylvania, would be relocated to include all of Monroe, and the northern portion of Northampton County.

Pike and Wayne counties would remain in a sprawling horseshoe-shaped 20th district which would no longer include any of Monroe.

Monroe would share five House districts, instead of the current four.

The plan would make mostly minor changes to area House districts.

The Commission voted 3-2, along party lines, to approve the tentative map.  A 30-day public comment period will follow before a final decision is made.
