BUSHKILL - Park rangers at the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area recovered the body of a New York City woman after she was reported missing in the park on Sunday, November 13th. Kathleen Stein, 67, was found in Spackman’s Creek, on the Pennsylvania side of the park, at approximately 10 p.m. Sunday evening. National Park Service officials released details yesterday Stein and a friend arrived in the park early in the afternoon to go for a hike. According to her hiking companion, the two typically travel together to one location, then separate and take different trails. On this occasion, Stein’s friend hiked along the main branch of Spackman’s Creek. She followed a different route along the north side of the creek. At 8:24 p.m., the park’s 24-hour Communications Center was notified by the Pike County 911 Center that Stein’s friend had reported her failure to return to their meeting point. Park rangers initiated a search and found her blaze-orange hat on the rim of the gorge above the creek. They discovered her body in the creek shortly thereafter; it appears that she fell from a height of approximately 100 feet. Park rangers, a National Park Service Special Agent, a Pennsylvania State Police forensic unit, and the Pike County coroner are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. |
