House approves school growth notification bill |

HARRISBURG – In an effort to keep school districts better informed about future student growth, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives unanimously approved legislation authored by Rep. Mario Scavello (R-Monroe) that would require municipalities to regularly update public schools about approved housing development plans. “School districts need to be aware of plans for new housing developments so they can prepare for increased student enrollment,” said Scavello. “This legislation is aimed at encouraging greater communication between our municipalities, which have zoning approval for new housing developments, and our schools, which have the responsibility of properly educating students.” House Bill 823 would amend the Pennsylvania Municipalities Planning Code to require a municipality to notify the superintendent of a school district in which a housing development plan receives final approval. The notification must include the location, number of housing units and expected construction schedule. The notices are to be provided on a monthly basis. “We need to foster improved communication and cooperation at all levels of government,” said Scavello. “Good schools attract community growth and community growth leads to an additional need for teachers, classroom space, books, supplies and everything else a student will need. Working together and exchanging information early in the process will help municipalities and school districts better serve our citizens.” The legislation will now go before the Senate. |
