Heavy rain brings flood threat, power outages |

POCONOS – Flood warnings are up for a wide area that includes Monroe, Pike and Wayne counties. Some areas could get two to four inches of rain, including what has already fallen. The Delaware River should stay well below flood stage in all areas, but smaller streams could pose a threat, with heavy rain expected to continue at least through Thursday. The rain, including scattered thunderstorms, has caused a new round of electric outages, just as the region has finally recovered from the massive power loss associated with Irene. As of 4:00 this morning, Met Ed is showing scattered outages in Monroe and Pike Counties, but none in Wayne. PPL reports 419 out in Monroe, 886 in Pike and 228 in Wayne. With heavy rain forecast for most of Pennsylvania this week, PennDOT is reminding motorists to never drive through flooded roads or around barricades placed by emergency responders. Motorists should also slow down, allow extra travel time and expect delays. “Motorists should never attempt to drive over flooded roadways,” said PennDOT Deputy Secretary for Highway Administration Scott Christie, P.E. “Floodwaters are usually much deeper than they appear. Too often, emergency responders are asked to risk their own lives to pull stranded motorists to safety.” |
