Pocono Raceway working with NASCAR on weather safety issues |

LONG POND - Pocono Raceway is pledging to continuing working closely with NASCAR regarding safety of fans, teams and other attendees throughout the course of race weekends. the raceway issued a statement Monday following the death of one fan in injuries to several others by lightning strikes on Sunday. Brian Zimmerman, 41, of Moosic was identified as the man killed. Nine other individuals were transferred to local hospitals as a result of two separate lightning strikes. "A long time member of our Pocono Raceway family, a spectator has passed away following a lightning strike", reads a statement posted on the Pocono Raceway website. "On behalf of the entire staff here at Pocono Raceway, we are deeply saddened by yesterday’s tragic events. As mentioned, our fans are like family to us and we express our deepest condolences to the individuals and families involved, especially Mr. Zimmerman’s. The raceway is in the process up establishing a Memorial Fund for victims of the tragedy. |
