Pike to end county recycling program

These bins will dissapear on October 1

MILFORD - Pike County Commissioners have announced the end of the county recycling program effective October 1. The commissioners stated that all containers at recycling sites throughout the county will be removed by that date.

Reasons for the end of the program are economic. The program, which was successful at first, has become cost prohibitive to operate due to economic market downturn, reduction in state funding and administrative fees, and increased program expenses.

Another big problem is dumping of household trash and prohibited items, including furniture.

The county will put up signs at all sites informing residents of the closing date. Monitoring will be done for one month to assist with the removal of any illegal dumping.

Private haulers are now providing curbside, single stream recycling to customers at no additional charge.

“We do not want to be in the business of competing with private haulers. We are not mandated by law to run a recycling program,” said Commissioner Rich Caridi. “The bottom line is we need to use our money wisely with a 10 percent cut in funding for Human Services from the state and a new courthouse project on the horizon. We do not want to add to the tax burden of our constituents.”
