SPARROWBUSH – Police have identified the victim of a drowning in the Delaware River off Sparrowbush as a Yonkers man. Deerpark Town Police said Efrain Campos, 42, has been rafting on the Delaware with his girlfriend, Julie Negron.
At about 4:15 p.m., as they neared a Sparrowbush area livery destination, Campos decided to go swimming and removed his life jacket and sandals. His girlfriend lost sight of him, but did not see him go under water.
About 20 minutes later, she became concerned and took the raft to the shore in the area of Sleepy Hollow Road to call for help.
The Sparrowbush Engine Company was dispatched as well as other area fire department dive teams along with a State Police helicopter.
Campos’ body was located later in shallow water on the Pennsylvania side of the river and brought back to the New York shore. The Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office was called to the scene to remove the body and determine the cause of death.
Deerpark Police said there was no evidence of alcohol or drug use present. Foul play is not suspected, they said. |
