Teen sentenced to jail for fatal crash

MILFORD - Jeffrey Emerson, 19, of Milford was sentenced on Friday, for a Homicide by Vehicle that occurred in 2011 on SR 2001 in Dingman Township.  Judge Joseph Kameen sentenced Emerson to 2 to 18 months in the Pike County Correctional Facility after he had previously pled guilty to Homicide by vehicle and two motor vehicle violations. Emerson is also ordered to pay $1,118.00 in fines and had his driver’s license suspended for three years.

On April 30, 2011, while driving behind another vehicle Emerson decided, against the warning of a passenger in his vehicle, to pass the vehicle in front of him. The area where Emerson passed the other vehicle was on an uphill stretch of SR 2001. When returning to the proper lane of travel, Emerson went off the roadway and struck a guide rail. Emerson’s vehicle then crossed over into the opposite lane of travel and collided with a car driven by William Thiel, who died as a result of the collision.

The Pennsylvania State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit conducted an investigation of the collision. The investigation revealed Emerson’s vehicle was traveling between 69 miles per hour and 74 miles per hour when his vehicle began sliding towards the guide rail. At the time Emerson’s vehicle collided with the vehicle driven by Mr. Thiel, the vehicle was still traveling between 50 and 55 miles per hour. The posted speed limit in the area of SR 2001 where the collision occurred was 35 miles per hour.
