Pocono Mountain may cut almost 300, including teachers

POCONO SUMMIT – Facing mounting budget issues, the Pocono Mountain School District reported at Wednesday night’s meeting that 295 staff and teaching positions could go, if a plan to close up to three schools is carried out.

According to media reports, over half the cuts would be teachers.  Schools that would close are Coolbaugh Elementary, Coolbaugh Learning Center and Swiftwater Intermediate

The district is facing declining enrollment, down about 600 students this academic year, alone.

A decision on what schools might be closed and exactly how many staff could be cut is not expected until later this spring.
