EFFORT – A man retrieving mail at his roadside mailbox was killed by a passing vehicle, Wednesday evening. 

Police say Walter Machalick, 85, was hit by the passing car at about 5:30 p.m., outside his home on Route 115.  He was thrown about 100 feet and was dead at the scene.

The driver of the car, James York Jr., 50, of effort flipped his car.  He was treated for minor injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.  As of late Wednesday evening, no charges had been filed.
