Route 209 bridge reopens

HAMILTON TWP - Motorists traveling on Business Route 209 will now have a better ride, thanks to a project that rehabilitated the structurally deficient, 84-year old Business Route 209 Bridge over McMichael Creek in Hamilton Township, Monroe County.

The Bridge has been closed since May, and reopened to traffic Wednesday afternoon.

The project involved rehabilitating the 82 feet long, 29 feet wide stone arch bridge that was built in 1928. The project includes replacing the bridge parapets, bridge deck, and re-pointing the stone on the arch.

The Business Route 209 Bridge was restricted to a single lane in the southbound direction in December 2012 due to separation of a spandrel wall and stone arch. The Bridge also was posted at that time with a weight restriction of 15 tons. There will be no weight or lane restrictions when the rehabilitated bridge opens today.

During the rehabilitation work, Business Route 209 was closed and detoured between Bossardsville Road and Neola Road. The posted detour route utilized Bossardsville Road and North Easton Belmont Pike.

This section of Business Route 209 has an average daily traffic volume of 5,244 vehicles.

This work was part of a $4,828,750 bridge preservation contract awarded to J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Pa. to repair 13 structures in Engineering District 5.
