Man convicted of prolonged sexual abuse of children gets a century and a half in prison


STROUDSBURG - A man convicted of repeated sexual assault of minors, for seven years, was sentenced to 44 to 168 years in a state correctional facility.

Valnn Spears, 59, of STroudsburg, was found guilty of all criminal charges after a three-day jury trial ending on December 7, 2018. He was charged in two criminal cases, involving two minor victims. He was convicted of all 17 criminal charges, including two counts of rape of a child and two counts of involuntary sexual deviate intercourse with a child, as well as other sex related offences.

One of the victims reported the abuse to police. Thorough criminal investigation, which included taking both victims to the Monroe County Children’s Advocacy Center, revealed that the defendant had sexually abused the voctims over between 2008 to 2015, in Tobyhanna.

Spears had relocated to Monroe County from New York, where he was employed as a teacher. He also ran workshops for the Regenesis Institute, which involved breathing and new age mediation techniques. Prior to that he resided in California, where he had a prior conviction for possession of forged prescriptions.

If eventually released from prison, will also be required to register as sex-offender for the rest of his life.
