WYOU drops local news

SCRANTON – The last local newscast to be seen on Scranton-based WYOU TV was the 11 p.m. news Friday night.  Station management issued a low-keyed announcement late Friday announcing the changes.

The announcement, posted on the WYOU’s website news page, does not explicitly say news is being dropped, but in listing program additions, entertainment programming is going into slots previously occupied by the late afternoon/evening and late evening news.

“The viewers have spoken, letting us know that WYOU is the station they rely on for entertainment”, says Dennis Thatcher, EVP/COO for Mission Broadcasting, WYOU’s owner, in the web statement.

The station, a CBS network affiliate, covered primarily the Scranton and Wilkes-Barre area, but occasionally reported on major stories in a wider area including the Poconos.

National news programming will continue, including The Early Show, and CB S Evening News.

Two stations continue to provide local and regional northeast Pennsylvania news coverage: WNEP (ABC) and WBRE (NBC).  WNEP also shares its news coverage with Fox affiliate WOLF.

WBRE provided some news content for WYOU and at times, WBRE and WYOU simulcast early morning news casts.
