Students present CPR program at Commissioner meeting

Chelsea Grompone demonstrates CPR

MILFORD - Three students from Susan Briggs’ HOSA classes from Delaware Valley High School presented an Importance of CPR Program to the Pike County Commissioners. Katie Goetz, Kevin Bunting, and Chelsea Grompone, all planning on training for a health service related career after graduation, gave information on the background of CPR, demonstrated how to do CPR, and gave statistics about how CPR can save lives after a person has a cardiac arrest

CPR as we know it was invented in 1960. The purpose of it is to get oxygenated blood to the brain as soon as possible after a cardiac arrest. Brain damage will begin 4 minutes after the heart stops. More than 95% of cardiac arrest patients die before reaching the hospital. About 1,000 people a day die because of a cardiac arrest. CPR is known to revive 1% of the time while use of an AED, Automated External Defibrilator, is known to revive 90% of the time.

To help prevent cardiac arrest a person can quit smoking, keep cholesterol level in check, get a regular check-up, control blood pressure, eat a healthy diet, and try to control daily stress level.

The Red Cross and the American Heart Association run classes to help people become CPR certified. The goal is to have one person in every household trained in CPR.
