Delaware Valley ready to begin Alternative School Program

WESTFALL TOWNSHIP – The Delaware Valley School District is ready to implement an alternative school program, hopefully by the end of the first week of school next week.

There are approximately 20 expelled students who would be able to take advantage of this program which will run weekdays from 4-7pm. at the DV Middle School. The classes will consist of four core curriculum subjects English, science, social studies, math, and a health class. They will be run by a teacher certified in each subject one day a week. There will be a special education teacher available to help where needed and an administrator, Mark McElroy will be on hand to oversee the program.

The students will be following DV curriculum through an online program called Florida Virtual School Resources.” This program will give students 15 hours of instruction per week instead of the 5 or 6 they would get with homebound instruction,” said Dr.Finan.

The cost of the program was discussed at length by the school board Thursday night. It will actually cost DV less to run this program than pay teachers for the homebound instruction that would normally be offered these students. It will cost approximately $2,000 per student whereas it costs DV approximately $7,000 to educate a student per year.

The only catch to the program is that each student must find his own transportation to attend. School bus transportation will not be available
