Monroe County sewer company gets rate hike

HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) today voted to approve a rate increase request by Manwalamink Sewer Co., Monroe County.

The Commission voted 5-0 to allow the company to raise its rates by about $124,600 (33.6 percent).  The new rates will increase the average annual bill for metered residential customers based on an average usage of 40,500 gallons per year by about $94.68 from $281.04 to $375.72.  The annual bill for unmetered residential customers will increase by about $107.04 from $318 to $425.04.

The company provides service to 1,162 metered customers and 49 unmetered customers in the Village of Shawnee on Delaware, and portions of Smithfield and Middle Smithfield townships in Monroe County.  The Commission found the company’s need for an increase was to recover the costs of providing service that were not fully reflected in the company’s current charges.
