Former fire department treasurer arrested

BLOOMING GROVE – Police in Pike County have arrested the former treasurer of the Promised Land Volunteer Fire Department on multiple felony charges. Stuart Ferber is accused of taking more than $95,000 from the department over a ten-year period.

Ferber, 44, is charged with theft, identity theft, and access device fraud. He is free on his own recognizance.

Police say Ferber apparently used the money for personal expenses, including trips to Atlantic City, and to Mansfield, where he maintained a camper.

The discrepancy in the account first came to light, last fall, when the fire department was unable to cover some expenses, despite having received a grant.  An audit was done in January, confirming the missing money.

Ferber then resigned.

Ferber was arrested this week, and reportedly has admitted to police that he took the money.

He was arraigned and released on his own recognizance.  He is due back in court July 7.
