Rail riders slammed with fat fare hike

Lots of Pike County riders catch the train in Port Jervis,
just across the river from Matamoras

NEW YORK – Commuters who ride the trains out of Port Jervis will face a more than 20 percent fare hike in two months.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Board Wednesday approved fares for all of its services. All but one member voted for the hike, saying they had no choice since the state has not bailed them out as they had hoped.

For monthly ticket holders, the monthly fare will go from $344 to $426.  The standard one-way fare goes from $17.00 to $20.75.  The fares are to/from Penn Station and are the rates for ticket office/ticket machine purchases.

The new fares take effect June 1.
