PennDOT invites volunteer for “Great PA Cleanup”

NORTHEAST PA - Volunteers from PennDOT’s District 4-0, covering Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Susquehanna, Wayne and Wyoming counties, are preparing for Saturday, April 25, the Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania. The statewide campaign is a massive effort to remove litter from the state's roadways, parks, river banks and open spaces.

"Pick It Up PA Days" is the main event when Pennsylvanians from across the Commonwealth conduct cleanup and planting projects. Communities are being asked to organize and conduct local cleanups — recruit volunteers, promote their events, and report their results for inclusion in statewide and national cleanup totals. Pennsylvania's 2009 "Pick It Up PA Days" are April 25 to May 9. The national Great American Cleanup of Pennsylvania runs from March 1 to May 31.

By visiting the official registration website,, hosted by PA Cleanways, individuals may click on “Find an Event Near You” to determine where they may volunteer as well as register for free cleanup supplies provided by sponsors. Cleanup event pictures may also be posted to the website.

PennDOT will provide work gloves and safety vests and the Glad Corporation will provide free trash bags. The Pennsylvania Waste Industries Association will offer free landfill space to dispose of non-recyclable waste collected during the cleanup by providing fee waivers at area landfills from April 25 to May 9. These will be available following website registration.
