Norovirus blamed for school illness

TOBYHANNA – State health officials say it apparently was a norovirus that sickened some 200 students at Coolbaugh Elementary Center last Friday.  That’s based on an assessment of the symptoms that included widespread nausea and vomiting.

The school was open Monday but about 100 students did not come to school and another 25 students were sent home after coming to school sick.

The Pocono Mountain School District is reminding parents to keep their children home, if they appear sick.

Water was tested Friday and had no problems.  Crews spent the weekend sanitizing the entire school.

A norovirus is a form of gastric distress that can make the victim very uncomfortable, with vomiting a d diarrhea, but usually runs its course in 24 to 48 hours and leaves no lasting symptoms.  Good personal hygiene is considered essential in preventing spread of the disease.
