Funding for Honesdale Army National Guard moves forward

WASHINGTON, D.C  - Funding for the Army National Guard Honesdale Reserve Center is one step closer to reality.  Today, the House Armed Service Committee announced it will seek authorization for $504,000 in the 2009 Department of Defense Authorization Act for the design of a readiness center addition for the Army National Guard Honesdale Reserve Center. This authorization was requested by Congressman Christopher Carney.

“My office has worked diligently to secure this authorization because I know how hard our Army National Guard works—protecting our local communities and serving our country overseas. This authorization is a necessary step in our process to modernize and improve the Honesdale Reserve Center—something I have heard firsthand from our troops that is needed and something our government should deliver,” said Carney.

This authorization is an important first step in acquiring funding for Military Construction projects. Carney’s office has requested this project receive funding through the 2009 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations Act.

The design phase of this project is the first step toward the ultimate goal of providing needed alterations to approximately 22,339 square feet of the existing Honesdale Readiness Center as well as the construction of an 11,578 square feet addition. Built in 1977, the Honesdale Reserve Center is in need of significant modernization in order to accommodate today’s modern mission readiness training requirements and 55 Headquarters Brigade Combat Team (HBCT) support for Homeland Security operations. It will also bring the facility up to date with the latest health, safety, and facility codes.
