STROUDSBURG – A Monroe County jury needed only 90 minutes to find Derek Bengtsson guilty of all charges, including attempted murder, rape, and several other crimes, related to a standoff at a Stroudsburg motel last August. The verdict was announced early Tuesday evening.

Bengtsson, 28, of Middle Smithfield Township, earlier had testified in his own defense, saying the sex with a girl, 14 at the time, was consensual, and that he had concocted the incident to get back the parents of the girl. He had expected the episode to end with him killing himself, or police killing him.

Instead, after the girl he allegedly held in the motel room for several hours fled and contacted her parents who called police, he fired several shots at officers who arrived.  Bengtsson surrendered only after a negotiator persuaded him to do so.

Bengtsson will be sentenced later.
