Shoppers beware, warns AG

HARRISBURG - Attorney General Tom Corbett today urged consumers to use extra caution during the holiday season to avoid common problems.

"The joy of the holidays can quickly disappear when consumers are faced with issues like identity theft or disputes involving purchases," Corbett said. "Because this season can be filled with so many distractions, it is extremely important for consumers to carefully consider all the issues related before they spend their hard-earned money."

Corbett recommended reviewing store polices before making a purchase, including:

  • Restrictions or exceptions on exchanges or returns.
  • Fees or expiration dates on gift cards or gift certificates.
  • Proof-of-purchase requirements for returns or warranty repairs.

Additionally, Corbett urged consumers to check receipts for errors before leaving the store; carefully consider dealing with seasonal businesses that may quickly disappear after the holidays; and avoid carrying extra credit cards or personal information that could be compromised if your wallet or purse is lost or stolen.

"Online shopping is popular and convenient, but making purchases by long-distance generates its own list of potential problems," Corbett said.

  • Research stores or sellers to see if they have a history of satisfied customers.
  • Consider shipping and handling fees when shopping for the best price.
  • Understand delivery times and shipping costs.
  • Review refund and return policies.
  • Read the businesses' privacy policy to be certain that your information won't be sold or shared without your knowledge.
  • Print all receipts and emails to verify your purchase.
  • Make sure your computer anti-virus program and firewall is up-to-date.
  • Watch for "look alike" website used by scam artists
