Turnpike lease bid expires

HARRISBURG – A Spain-based consortium that offered almost $13 billion to lease the Pennsylvania Turnpike is pulling out.  Pennsylvania Transportation  Partners, which includes Albertis Infraestructuras of Spain and Citi Infrastructure Investors, cites inaction by the state legislature for walking away.

A spokesman for the group, however, says they would come back, under the right circumstances.

Gov. Edward Rendell had pursued the lease option as an alternative to imposing tolls on Interstate 80.  The toll plan was rejected by federal regulators a month ago.

The PTP offer was announced in May.
