DRBC engineer gives states good marks on natural gas monitoring

The Marcellus Shale formation underlies most of the poconos, but interest
in gas exploration is concentrated mainly in northern areas,
including Wayne County

MONTICELLO NY – A Delaware River Basin Commission engineer, meeting with Sullivan County NY officials, says both New York and Pennsylvania are keeping pace with the sudden interest in natural gas exploration in the vast Marcellus Shale formation.

Both Pennsylvania acted quickly to enforce its regulations to bring both basin commissions [Delaware and Susquehanna] into the activity; same thing with New York”, said William Muszynski.   “Some of the work has slowed down as the regulatory process is fully put into effect, so, I think the states are doing very well.”

A primary concern, said Muszynski, is how much surface or ground water will be consumed by each drilling operation, what chemicals will be added, and what will happen to the waste.
