Professor acquitted of rape, guilty on lesser charges

Stroudsburg – East Stroudsburg University Associate Professor Richard Nyamwange was found not guilty of raping a former student, but a jury convicted him of sexual assault.  The jury returned its verdict late Monday afternoon, after deliberating about three hours.  The trial began last week.

While Nyamwange was found not guilty on the most serious charge, he was convicted on lesser charges, including sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault and indecent assault, in connection with an incident involving a 19-year-old former student, in his East Stroudsburg home last November.

The defense argued the sex was consensual.

An appeal is planned

Nyamwange, who taught economics at ESU, but has been on unpaid leave,  could face ten years in prison if the verdict stands.
