Pike resident victim of scam

Lehman Township – A 38-year-old man fell victim to a common scam, sending almost $2,000 in response to a letter claiming he had won a large amount of money.

The Rustic Acres resident received a letter from something claiming to be “Instant Solution Group of Publishers Sweepstakes”, claiming he had won $86,000, but that he send $1,980 via Western Union in order to process the prize.  He never received the “prize”.

Police ask that anyone receiving a similar ‘offer’, should contact them at 579-226-5718.

Legitimate contests rarely ask for advance payments to claim winnings.  Personal information, such as social security or credit card numbers should never be given unless you are fully certain of the reliability of the company with which you are dealing.  Another red flag is asking to send money via Western Union or any other courier or non-standard U.S. Mail.
