Monroe County airport gets state grant

MOUNT POCONO - Pocono Mountain Municipal Airport will receive $2,193,750 for the second phase of a runway extension and widening project.

The airport is one of six statewide that will upgrade facilities and make safety improvements with the help of a $3.8 million investment of federal and state funds, PennDOT Secretary Allen Biehler said.

“Maintaining the safety and efficiency of our airports is as important as making improvements to roads, bridges and rail service,” Biehler said. “This funding will help the airports remain safe while they meet their customers’ demands.”

The state portion of funding — $104,725 from PennDOT’s aviation development program — comes from the state’s jet fuel tax and leverages nearly $100,000 in local matching funds.

The Federal Aviation Administration is providing more than $3.6 million in grants through the block grant program, which is funded through taxes collected nationally on airline tickets, freight waybills, international departure fees, and sale of aviation fuel.
