Smoking ban in effect

STATEWIDE – Pennsylvania’s comprehensive new smoking ban went into effect at midnight this morning.  The long-debated ban, enacted by the legislature and signed by Gov. Rendell earlier this year, bans smoking in most work places and other areas where people gather to eat or have fun.

Included in the ban are any establishment where food is at least 20 percent of the annual retail business.  Exempt would be a few bars, and some private clubs.

Fines, which can be levied on owners, staff and customers, range from $250 to $2,000 per violation.

Violations can be reported by calling the State Health Depatment at 877-835-9535.
