Fabienne Keller considers the proposal “contrary to the values of the European Union”.
Renew MEP Fabienne Keller, invited Tuesday, October 15 on franceinfo, firmly opposed the proposal of the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen who said she wanted to “learn lessons” from the agreement signed between Italy and Albania. Italian leader Georgia Meloni signed a controversial agreement to transfer migrants to centers she manages in Albania. On Monday, a first group of migrants was transferred.
Fabienne Keller considers this approach “contrary to the values of the European Union” and “unacceptable”. “The acceptance of the Italian concept of externalizing asylum applications” is “extremely shocking”, declared the MEP. The MEP adds that this would be “making people believe that we should not deal with the problem at home, but that we should push it elsewhere and that it will be resolved, when we know very well that decent conditions cannot be ensured” for migrants.
Fabienne Keller also insists on the importance of implementing existing texts rather than adopting new laws, recalling that “it is not by producing a lot of new laws that we will solve problems” and that “the asylum pact already provides for areas where people will not have officially entered the European Union yet, in the sense that they will not have free movement”.
